MODSARUS® is a platform equipped with tools for
the engineering of modern energy infrastructure
based on IEC standards, and since July 2026,
Ardans has been responsible for its marketing.

  What is MODSARUS®?

MODSARUS® stands for MODelling Smartgrid Architecture Unified Solution.

MODSARUS® can be described as a tool for "modelling a unified solution for smart grid architecture".

MODSARUS® is therefore a powerful plug-in for Enterprise Architect® (EA): the UML modelling tool marketed by Sparx Systems.

The aim is to define business processes, digital protection automation and control systems, and data exchanges, whilst supporting and complying with the standards of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), such as IEC 61850 and CIM.

MODSARUS®, which is being developed by EDF and ENEDIS, is currently organised around three functional modules:

1. MODSARUS® "BAP" (BAP standing for Basic Application Profiles) for the model-based design of equipment functions (protection, automation and control systems) in accordance with the IEC 61850 standard,
    
2. MODSARUS® "Use Case" for defining business processes (in accordance with the use case methodology set out in the IEC standard, IEC 62559).
    
3. MODSARUS® "Data Flow" to support the definition of exchange interfaces based on enterprise data models or IEC (CIM) models. It complements EA’s existing core functionality for generating generic or domain-specific XSD schemas using EA SchemaComposer.

 Ardans partners with EDF and ENEDIS to market MODSARUS®

Ardans has been recognised for many years as an expert (see ‘Survey Analysis: Adoption of CIM at utilities is challenged by a lack of resources’, Gartner ID: G00305656, 31 January 2017) in the field of modelling the automation of electrical substations, which forms the core of the IEC 61850 standard; EDF and ENEDIS have entrusted Ardans with the marketing of MODSARUS®.

 CRIEPI is MODSARUS® "BAP"’s first Japanese customer

The Grid Innovation Research Laboratory at the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI), based near Tokyo, is the first organisation to acquire the MODSARUS® "BAP" licence for this launch in summer 2026.
