ARDANS

Ardans, expert in knowledge management, offers you a series of modules on "Communities of Practice", based on its CoPBoK methodological reference framework, the result of over 25 years' experience, and the CoPManager workshop, designed and developed to support all knowledge managers in animating and managing the community of facilitators of communities of practice (the CoP of CoPs).

This training course is structured around five modules, each lasting four hours:

  • Module A: Introduction to communities
  • Module B: Managing and facilitating a CoP with the Core Group
  • Module C: Understanding the operational activities of a CoP
  • Module D: Understanding and managing the life of a CoP
  • Module M: Using the CoP Manager, the CoP facilitator’s environment

The CoP training course is aimed at a wide audience: facilitators, coordinators, community managers, as well as any active member of a professional community (whether based on profession, learning or practice), knowledge managers, and indeed anyone involved in the development of CoPs.

The CoP training course is preferably delivered face-to-face, mainly as in-house training, and via blended learning on request.

Introduction to communities

Module A: Introduction to Communities has several objectives:

  • To understand what professional communities are, and more specifically Communities of Practice (CoPs)
  • To understand how communities and knowledge management fit together within the framework of the ISO 30401 standard
  • To understand the roles within a CoP and how to be a ‘good facilitator’
  • To understand the different stages of maturity of a CoP

 

  • Duration: 0.5 days (4 hours)
  • Prerequisites: None

Module A of the Communities of Practice training covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to communities: terminology conventions
  • Types of communities: different categories and a classification framework
  • Communities of practice and knowledge management
  • The specific characteristics of a CoP
  • The CoP maturity model
  • Roles within a CoP
  • Conclusion: key takeaways
  • Illustrated using the CoPBoK® as a reference

Managing and facilitating a Community of Practice with the Core Group

Module B: Managing and facilitating a CoP with the Core Group has several objectives:

  • To understand the importance of roles within a CoP
  • To understand how to be a ‘good facilitator’ of a CoP
  • To know and understand the different stages of maturity of a CoP
  • To define the scope of your CoP and its objectives
  • To prepare for the launch and launch your CoP
  • To understand the importance of your CoP’s charter
  • To facilitate your CoP and assess member satisfaction

 

  • Duration: 0.5 days (4 hours)
  • Prerequisites: Ideally
    • Be a member of a professional network or a Community of Practice
    • Have completed module KM05a

Module B of the Communities of Practice training covers the following topics:

  • The roles found within a CoP and their importance
  • The CoP maturity model
  • Preparing and launching your CoP
  • Facilitation: at launch and throughout all stages of the CoP’s development
  • The facilitator’s ongoing responsibilities: facilitating, recruiting members and managing their motivation to contribute
  • Getting my CoP to deliver: methods and tools (managing operational activities and defining the roadmap)
  • Simulating the creation of a CoP: “Let’s get started: would we like to form a CoP for community facilitators together?”
  • Conclusion: what are the key takeaways?
  • Illustrated using the CoPBoK® as a resource
